Disclaimer
This application does not provide customs, tax, or legal advice. It computes an independent estimate of landed cost from published Barbados tariff and tax law, and compares that estimate against a customs assessment you enter. Nothing it displays is a ruling, a determination, or professional advice, and no relationship of professional advice is created by using it.
The authoritative figure is the one Customs issues
Only the Barbados Customs & Excise Department can assess duty, excise, VAT, levies and fees on an importation. Where this app's computation differs from an official assessment, the official assessment governs unless and until it is changed through the proper process. A difference flagged here is a question worth asking, not a proven error and not authority to pay a different amount.
How the numbers are produced, and where they can be wrong
Figures come from a rules engine applying rates held in a tariff database built by parsing published schedules and orders. That means specific, knowable failure modes:
- Rate currency. Rates change by order and by budget measure. A rate in the database may predate a change, or a change may not yet be reflected for the date of your entry.
- Classification. Choosing the tariff heading for a good is a judgement. The app can suggest and remember codes, but a wrong classification produces a confidently wrong number.
- Source transcription. Rates are extracted from published documents. Rows the parser cannot read confidently are withheld rather than guessed, but extraction is not infallible.
- Inputs. Values, quantities, volumes, alcohol strengths, freight, insurance and exchange rates come from you or from automated reading of your documents. Wrong inputs produce wrong output.
- Interpretation. Where the law is ambiguous, the engine implements a specific reading of the statute. A reasonable person — including Customs — may read it differently.
Before you rely on a figure
Verify it independently before using it to file an entry, to price goods, to dispute an assessment, or to make any commercial commitment. Check the rate against the current published schedule, confirm the classification, and consult a licensed customs broker or attorney where the amount or the risk warrants it.
Automated document reading
Uploaded documents may be processed by an automated extraction system that reads values, line items and charges. This is a convenience to save typing; it makes mistakes, including confident ones. Every extracted value is presented for review before it is used, and it is your responsibility to check it.
